Good food at a reasonable price. Wish they accepted c.cards... but it seems most Chinese restaurants in the area don't accept them. Be warned, bring your cash.

Food is good for the area, probably one of the better chinese food places in the immediate area. Prices are in the decent range. Portion sizes are generous. They do run a lunch special if you're ever in the area. My usual order is the general tso chicken. I'm not a fan of the fried rice so I opt for the plain white rice. A large order runs under $10. Tips: Cash only, they do have an ATM inside. They deliver. Parking lot out front Sometimes the wait can be long so try calling ahead.

This place is an absolute hidden gem. They have the best take out Chinese I've ever had(and I've had alot). General tso is amazing and the portion is very large. The staff is friendly too which is always a plus. I live in the city but will travel out my way for these guys!

China House

Nestled in the heart of Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood, China House at 5810 Greene St, Philadelphia, PA 19144 is a local gem where comfort food meets Chinese-American flavor. Whether you're a longtime resident or just passing through, this cozy diner-style spot offers a quick bite or a filling dinner that hits all the right notes.

Discovering China House in Philadelphia

When you're craving something warm, savory, and satisfying, China House delivers exactly what you'd expect from a reliable neighborhood eatery. From the outside, it may not scream “destination dining,” but the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by the familiar scent of stir-fried goodness and the sound of dishes clinking behind the counter. What makes this place stand out isn’t just the food—it’s the consistency, the generous portions, and the feeling that you’re eating something made with intention.

A few months back, I found myself working late near Germantown and stumbled into China House just before closing. I ordered their General Tso’s chicken, a classic, but they nailed it: crisp edges, slightly sweet heat, and that nostalgic red sauce that only a seasoned wok can create. Since then, it’s been my go-to when in the area.

Exploring the Menu and What Makes It Click

The menu at China House is built around familiar favorites—lo mein, fried rice, egg rolls, dumplings, and of course, the must-have sesame chicken. But don’t be fooled by the basics. This place knows how to elevate the classics. Their shrimp with broccoli has a ginger-soy balance that’s surprisingly refined for a small diner, and the roast pork egg foo young is one of the better versions I've had this side of the Schuylkill.

What’s particularly enjoyable is the way they keep the flavor profiles aligned with what locals love. You won’t find Sichuan peppercorns here, but you will get that perfect balance of savory, sweet, and salty that defines Chinese-American comfort food. Portion sizes are also generous—you’ll easily get two meals out of most entrées.

Everything from the crispy spring rolls to the hearty combination platters seems designed for people who don’t just want to eat—they want to feel full and satisfied. If you’re someone who appreciates value in both taste and quantity, you’ll feel right at home here.

More Than Just Food: The Location, Vibe, and Local Love

China House isn't just a place to eat—it’s a fixture in its community. Located along Greene Street, the restaurant is close to La Salle University and several residential blocks, making it a favorite for students, workers, and families alike. There’s a charm in the way people wave to the staff or call in their "usual" orders over the phone.

Though it’s mostly set up for takeout, there are a few spots to sit if you want to eat in. The vibe is casual and unpretentious, and the staff are quick, efficient, and always respectful. For those who like to read reviews before trying a new spot, you’ll find China House consistently described with words like “fast,” “tasty,” and “dependable.” That kind of consistency means something, especially in a city filled with ever-changing dining trends.

Why It’s Worth Coming Back

There’s a kind of comfort in returning to a place like China House. In a city full of bold fusion kitchens and rotating pop-up menus, it offers something steady and soul-satisfying. It's the kind of spot that may not trend on social media, but it keeps people coming back for the right reasons: good food, reasonable prices, and a location that feels like home base.

Whether you're grabbing beef and broccoli after a long shift or splitting orange chicken with your roommate on a Friday night, there’s something timeless about the experience. It’s not trying to reinvent anything—it’s just doing what it does well, every single day.

For those who live nearby or find themselves around the 19144 ZIP code, China House is one of those places that quietly earns its reputation meal by meal. Give it a shot, and chances are, you'll become a regular too.
